your skull, patiently waiting next to our empty seats.
you've seen the bright colorful trees around you
turning into dark empty thin shadows of themselves.
you've seen the first snow falling onto you, and froze again and again.
you've waited for us to come back to you, but we never did.
we have been so busy with our own lives, trying to create a bigger one out of two, loving and hurting each other in a wild dance of old wounds and new possibilities.

you have witnessed us.

what did you see?
what made you smile?
what made you cry?
when did you worry about us?
what do you see now?

I've seen two beautiful souls,
full of life, joy, dreams, and love,
meeting each other in front of me.

You met at night, quickly recognising and getting used to each other's shape in the dim light of the half moon and the street lights.

Your hearts were light in your first kiss,
ready for what you deeply craved and wished for eternities.

You.
Funny, sharp. Smart and witty.
Stunning in your impressive armour of dark monsters and thorns pressing deeply in your skin. The glorious smile of pain and hope in your face. Your soft gentle soul enclosed behind a formidable barrier of snakes, tigers, black holes and walls and jungles.

You.
Excited and nervous. Overwhelmed and comfortable, open to your full range of feelings and emotions to a mysterious and delightful stranger. You held me for a second in your arms while placing me on the ground next to you, and I felt the strength and the doubts inside yourself. All that you are capable of, and all that you're running from. All the love you can give, and all the love that you need. All your wounds, and the marks of the golden threads you used to mend them.

What did you wish for that night?
What did you dare to dream about?
How much longing, how much anticipation and promises after that brief kiss.

-

You have held each other's sorrows and memories and hopes, hugged each other's hearts and children with the brave, kind and innocent readiness of new lovers.
You have hurt each other's need to be listened to, and seen, and accepted, and loved as you are. Both asking, both craving, both requiring. Willing to meet half-way and not seeing how that leaves you both half listened to, half seen, half accepted.
Half loved.

You have shown each other so bright of your light, and so gloom of your darkness, and now you are both standing naked in the freezing soil of the winter morning.

Stillness is death.
Will one of you rescue the other at their own peril?
Will you die on your spot refusing to move?
Will you both start to roll outwards and seek help in your safety nuclear protocols and bunkers?

Will you ever realise how you can save each other in the warm hug you are both craving for and capable of?

-

I hope you do.
But I'm just a skull,
and so you will be.
